How many times have you heard either from a friend, a parent, or a coworker not to mix your professional and romantic lives? We’ve grown to believe that these two aspects of our lives must remain separate from one another at all times, but that isn’t necessarily true, especially for recruiters. Have you ever taken the time to really analyze how similar recruiting is to dating? Think about it for a second.

Dating and recruiting are all about finding the right person that fits your needs. It doesn’t always have to be a match made in heaven, it rarely is, but the ideal person in both scenarios is someone who can “get the job done”.

Dating Sites and Job Boards

Now think of this, what is the most effective way to find dates and candidates? While some people prefer to go out and find dates the traditional way, in bars, parties, or just waiting for a stroke of fate, many of us can agree that the best results, in terms of number of prospects, is through online dating. The same goes for finding candidates for a job opening; you could take to the streets and ask thousands of people and get 1 or 2 possible applicants, or maybe a few more in job fairs or networking events, but those don’t usually happen every day. If you want to see results, you should go online, where people are actually looking for jobs 24/7.

So now that we’ve arrived at our online dating or recruiting platform, we must then ask ourselves: What am I looking for? Whether you’re looking for your soulmate or a Marketing Director for your company, you already have a vague idea of what you want in that person. But is it enough to just post a list of qualities or skills you’re looking for with very limited information about yourself? You might still get some clicks, but probably not from as many good prospects as you’d like.

Make Them Come to You

The first thing you want to do is include as much information about yourself as you can. You’re hardly the only person there using the platform to find the best match possible. There’s a lot of competition out there and it’s up to you to do something to stand out among the rest in order to reel in good candidates. If you only focus on what you want without going into too much detail about who you are, you won’t get any hits. Think of what you have to offer, what qualities define you, what are your values, your strengths, and even your weaknesses. All of these aspects work wonders when attracting people. They will read about you, and if they feel a connection with you, they will give you that click you want so much.

Now answer this: Was the last paragraph about online dating or recruiting? Both! Just like you’re not the only single person out there looking for a significant other, you’re not the only recruiter looking for the perfect candidate. You need to make yourself stand out from the crowd.

Now ask yourself: If you were on a dating site, would you click on the profile of a person with a simple picture of themselves and just a list of qualities they are looking for in another person? You probably wouldn’t, you’d just move on to the next. Why should a job board be any different? There are tons of job offers out there. What’s stopping candidates from moving on from yours to the next? A key aspect to success in both dating and recruiting is seeing things from the point of view of the person you’re looking for.

We’re not saying that it’s all about giving out your information and expecting Mr. or Miss perfect to just show up. The information they give is just as relevant to you. Prospects should always put as much information as necessary on their résumés as they do in their dating profiles. This is a two-way street, you also have as much right to know who you’re dating or hiring as they do.

Think of what you have to offer, what makes you different and unique, and what you’re looking for, and use those qualities to promote yourself and find the right people you want. Show them who you are and what you can do for them and they will come to you on their own. We promise.
